WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN

In 1993 Mary qualified as a primary teacher and has taught in several schools in West Sussex, mostly teaching maths, art and music. More recently Mary has worked in museum education. This provided opportunities to work with a wide range of ages and abilities of pupils; planning and providing workshops using the Museum’s natural environment, buildings and objects to inspire and encourage learning. For eight years Mary was a tutor on the WSCC Able Pupil Programme, teaching courses with a maths, art and design theme.

As a basket maker much of Mary’s work involves relating design to mathematical principles such as space, shape, measurement and number. The aim of the workshops is to encourage children to experience the joy of making. If maths is part of the process, to feel positive and enthusiastic about using maths in a creative way and discover how it links to art and design.
